Undergraduate Awards for Study Away and Research

Undergraduate Scholarship Awards

Two undergraduate awards, intended to support study abroad and undergraduate research, are offered by the department. Students are encouraged to apply. See the applications for deadlines.

History Department Study Away Scholarship

The History Department offers history majors the opportunity to apply for the History Department Study AwayScholarship, an undergraduate scholarship created to support student research to encourage undergraduate history majors who wish to participate in an official UGA study abroad program. Selection for this award is based on financial need, academic promise, and the applicant's own words, conveyed through a one-page essay. The History Department will award grants by competitive application. The grants will vary in amount according to the needs of individual students. They are intended to cover costs associated with travel and study abroad. They may, for example, enable students to travel to other countries to take classes and to participate in language instruction or conduct research. Students accepted into the Washington Semester program may also apply for this award.

History Undergraduate Research Award

The History Department offers history majors the opportunity to apply for the History Undergraduate Research Award, an undergraduate scholarship created to support student research for the HIST4990 senior seminar research paper. History majors whose research (from the senior seminar or any other upper division history course) has been accepted for presentation at a professional conference may also apply for this award for travel funds.

The History Department will award grants by competitive application. The grants will vary in amount according to the needs of individual students. They are intended to cover costs associated with primary research. They may, for example, enable students to travel to archives and libraries outside of Athens, or to acquire essential research materials, especially reproductions of documents and manuscripts, and photocopies.

The History Department will consider applications from students in any field of history. The overriding criteria in selecting award recipients will be the quality of the applicant's research project, the feasibility of the research proposed, and the appropriateness of the activities and materials for which funding is requested.
