Soper's dissertation is entitled "A Context for Rule: Associations, Public Life, and Liberal Ideology in Nineteenth-Century Italy, 1848- 1914." In 1998, the Society of Italian Historical Studies awarded his dissertation the Howard A. Marraro Prize for the best unpublished manuscript in Italian history. He is currently revising his dissertation for publication.
