Associate Professor Director of the Center for Asian Studies I specialize in the cultural and socio-economic history of modern Japan, and, particularly, its relationship to Asia and the rest of the world. My new book project is a commodity history of food politics in Japan after World War II. I am the author of A Medicated Empire: The Pharmaceutical Industry and Modern Japan (Ithaca and London: Cornell University Press, 2021), which was awarded the 2022 Hagley Prize for best book in business history. I currently teach a broad range of courses in Japanese, East Asian, and global history including HIST2600: East Asia in the World, HIST3601: Pre-Modern Japan, HIST3602: History of Modern Japan, HIST3663: Modern China, HIST3610: Imperialism in East Asia, HIST 4402/6402: World War II in History and Memory, and HIST 4445/6445: A Global History of Drugs. Before UGA, I taught at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon and I was a postdoctoral fellow in the Program on U.S.-Japan Relations at Harvard University.
