Thursday, April 23 2026, 4 - 5:30pm North Tower Room 314, Zell Miller Learning Center The UGA community is invited to a reception in celebration of the new book Above the Oxbow: Stories Entangled with a Mountain (West Virginia University Press, April 2026) by Dr. Danielle Raad, Assistant Professor of History and Museum Studies. Above the Oxbow is a journey through the tangle of rich narratives surrounding Mount Holyoke, a locally cherished mountain in Western Massachusetts. The book sits at the intersection of public history and environmental history and offers an ethnography of place that examines how visitors have built connections with the mountain over the past two centuries. It highlights the significance of the landscape, historic sites, and material culture and shows how cultural perspectives, community activism, collective memory, and personal experiences shape the meanings associated with this place. Read more about the book or order a copy from the publisher's website. The first 20 attendees may receive a free signed copy of the book. Attendees may also bring their own copy for Dr. Raad to sign. Refreshments will be served.
