Europe-Early Modern The University of Georgia History department is committed to the study of European history, defined in the broadest possible terms. The graduate faculty includes Europeanists whose specializations cover a wide variety of geographic and thematic areas. Chronologically, we range from the ancient world to the late twentieth century. Environment & Agriculture Graduate students working at the intersection of environmental and agricultural history have been among our most successful alums in recent years. Multiple dissertation awards have been garnered from the American Society for Environmental History and the Agricultural History Society by our graduates. Our award-winning, nationally recognized faculty in the field actively participate in Dirty History, an interdisciplinary workshop in agriculture, environment, and capitalism. Early America In the most recent surveys of departments of history, the University of Georgia is ranked in the top twenty in the country. A major contributor to this ranking is the strength of the department's faculty in early American history. By all indications this field has grown in popularity over the years, and it was the place where historians introduced American students to the history of the family, quantitative methods, cultural studies and other innovative approaches to the study of the past. Digital History The Center for Virtual History, the UGA Digital Humanities Lab, CSI Dixie, Born Unfree, Indian Nation, History on the Move, People not Property, and the Georgia Virtual History Project are among the projects recently initiated by members of the UGA History Department in its quest to demonstrate new possibilities in collaborative pedagogy, research, and public outreach. New graduate and undergraduate courses are incorporating digital humanities techniques such as spatial history as our department emerges as a national leader in this cutting-edge field. African American The University of Georgia History Department offers an excellent opportunity to study and research African American history at the M.A. and Ph.D. levels with outstanding, prize-winning historians. The faculty's expertise and research interests span the entire breadth of African American history from slavery in the colonial period to the civil rights movement of the 1960s.
